TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka stated that President Prabowo Subianto decided to hold the 80th Anniversary ceremony of Indonesian Independence Day on August 17, 2025, at the State Palace in Jakarta. The ceremony will not be held at the Nusantara Capital (IKN) in East Kalimantan due to its ongoing development.
"We are simply following the President's directives, and besides, the IKN is still focusing on development," said Gibran in Boyolali, Central Java, on Friday, July 18, 2025, as quoted from a video released by the Press, Media, and Information Bureau (BPMI) of the Vice President's Secretariat in the Vice President's Journalist Group.
A day earlier, Deputy Minister of State Secretary Juri Ardiantoro stated that the 80th anniversary ceremony of Indonesian Independence Day will be held in Jakarta on August 17, 2025. The government will no longer hold the ceremony at the Nusantara Capital (IKN) as in previous years. Juri said that the infrastructure at the IKN is not yet ready.
"The IKN is currently in the construction process, so we are focusing on the development," said Juri when met at the parliament complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, July 17, 2025.
Nevertheless, Juri said that the IKN Authority will also hold a ceremony on August 17, 2025, at the Garuda IKN Palace in Penajam Paser Utara, East Kalimantan.
Regarding the theme and logo of the 80th Anniversary of Indonesian Independence Day, Juri mentioned that President Prabowo Subianto will announce the theme and logo on the same day, Friday, July 18, 2205. The launch is planned to take place at the Presidential Palace, where it will be broadcast live alongside ministries, institutions, and regional government officials.
In 2024, the 7th President Jokowi held the 79th Anniversary ceremony of Indonesian Independence Day on August 17, 2024, at the IKN. Approximately 1,400 guests attended the flag-raising ceremony at the IKN, a first in its history. Guests included state institution heads, ministers, religious and cultural figures, and around-the-clock workers for the IKN project.
Prabowo, who had previously been the elected president, had stated that he would hold the Independence Day ceremony again at the IKN. Prabowo expressed this while accompanying Jokowi in the Independence Day celebration at the IKN. "Insyaallah, it will be here again," he said in front of the State Palace, IKN, on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
