TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto met with former president and Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, March 19, 2026, in a closed-door meeting during the final days of Ramadan.
Prabowo confirmed the meeting through a post on his personal Instagram account, @prabowo.
“I received the 5th President of Indonesia, Mrs. Hj. Megawati Soekarnoputri, at the Merdeka Palace. This meeting continues the bond between national leaders,” Prabowo wrote after the meeting.
The Cabinet Secretariat also announced the visit through its official Instagram account, @sekretariat.kabinet, on the same day.
“On the 29th day of Ramadan approaching Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah, President Prabowo Subianto welcomed the 5th President of Indonesia, Mrs. Megawati Soekarnoputri, at the Merdeka Palace,” the Cabinet Secretariat said in its post.
Photos shared by the Cabinet Secretariat showed Prabowo holding Megawati’s hand as he escorted her up the steps of the palace. Megawati, who was Prabowo’s running mate in the 2009 presidential election, wore a blue-patterned batik outfit, while Prabowo appeared in a khaki safari suit with a presidential pin.
Megawati was accompanied by her daughter, Puan Maharani, a senior PDI-P politician and Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR). Prabowo was joined by Gerindra Party Secretary General and Deputy House Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, as well as his son, Didit Hediprasetyo.
According to the Cabinet Secretariat, the meeting was part of an Eid al-Fitr gathering ahead of the holiday.
Megawati’s convoy was seen entering the Presidential Palace complex at around 10:50 a.m. Jakarta time, and the meeting lasted about two hours. Her entourage, including Puan, left the palace at around 12:50 p.m.
Prabowo had previously invited Megawati to the Presidential Palace on March 3, but she was unable to attend because she was out of town.
At the time, PDI-P Central Executive Board Chair Deddy Yevri Sitorus said Megawati was in Bali for a long-planned internal party event.
