Prabowo's US-Iran Mediation Plan Not Yet Discussed with House

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Chairperson of House Commission I, Dave Akbarshah Fikarno Laksono, stated that President Prabowo Subianto has not yet officially communicated his intention to act as a mediator between the United States and Iran. The conflict in the Middle East escalated after Israel, alongside the US, launched an attack on Iran on February 28, 2026.

Indonesia has volunteered to facilitate dialogue among the conflicting parties. Furthermore, if approved by both sides, the President of Indonesia is willing to travel to Tehran for mediation.

"Regarding whether President Prabowo Subianto has communicated or requested input from the DPR regarding this plan, there has been no official communication received by Commission I of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia," stated Dave when contacted on Sunday, March 1, 2026.

Nevertheless, Dave emphasized that parliament is ready to provide support and strategic views if needed. This is particularly important to ensure that diplomatic steps remain within the corridor of national interests and in line with constitutional principles.

Furthermore, the Golkar Party politician stressed that several aspects need to be considered if Prabowo indeed travels to Tehran to act as a mediator. According to Dave, Indonesia must maintain a balanced position to remain neutral and avoid creating the impression of favoring either party.

In addition, the security and safety of the President and his entourage should be a top priority, "considering the highly dynamic situation in the region," he said.

Moreover, Dave stated that diplomatic steps should be integrated with multilateral efforts, both through the United Nations (UN) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Thus, Indonesia would not act alone, but as part of a broader international consensus.

Prabowo's idea to fly to Tehran to mediate the US-Iran conflict has drawn criticism. Former Deputy Foreign Minister Dino Patti Djalal believes the plan is unrealistic.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Jusuf Kalla, also known as JK, stated that Indonesia is not in an equal position with the US. According to him, the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) signed with the US on February 19, 2026, does not reflect equality and instead harms Indonesia.

"We are not equal to America on just that. How can someone who is unequal in this situation mediate in such negotiations?" JK said at his private residence in South Jakarta on Sunday, March 1, 2026.
