NASA Releases 12,000 Artemis II Photos from Far Side of Moon

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) of the United States (US) has released more than 12,000 photos taken by the crew of the Artemis II mission during the journey around the far side of the moon in April. Thousands of these images are now available to the public through NASA's astronaut photography archive.

These photos were taken from inside the Orion capsule by astronauts Reid Wiseman, Christina Koch, Victor Glover, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. The images document the mission's journey from the Earth orbit phase, lunar orbit flight, to the return to Earth.

According to Live Science, some of the previous photos had been published, including rare views of the far side of the moon during a solar eclipse, as well as the moment Earth appeared to vanish behind the lunar horizon. However, NASA has recently added thousands of other photos to its public archive.

The public can access the entire collection of Artemis II photos for free through NASA's official archive website at the link https://eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos/ShowQueryResults-Table.pl?results=177791454696961. Users can browse through thousands of images in the gallery, enlarge the photos, and view detailed captions for each image.

The Artemis II mission itself is part of NASA's program to return humans to the moon. Even though this mission has been completed, the photos taken are expected to continue to be used by scientists for research, as preparations for human landing on the lunar surface are targeted as early as 2028.

The total journey of the Orion spacecraft in the Artemis II mission around the moon and back to Earth lasted for 9 days, 1 hour, and 32 minutes. The distance covered was 694,481 miles (1,117,659 kilometers). Although slightly exceeding nine days, the mission is officially recorded as 10 days because the launch day is counted as the 'first flight day'.

During its journey, the crew set a record as the farthest humans have traveled from the Earth-reaching around 252,756 miles or 406,771 kilometers-more than 4,000 miles beyond the previous record held by Apollo 13 in 1970.
