Prabowo Urges Immediate Action on Giant Sea Wall: 'No More Delays'

21 hours ago 6

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said the construction of a giant sea wall must be carried out. This project will be built on the north coast of Java. According to Prabowo, there is no reason to postpone the project, especially since it has been included in the National Development Planning Agency's (Bappenas) planning since 1995, or 30 years ago.

"There will be no more delays or unnecessary talk. We will start immediately," said Prabowo during his speech at the International Conference on Infrastructure (ICI) 2025 at JCC Senayan on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

Prabowo stated that the giant sea wall will stretch from the north coast of Banten to Gresik in East Java and will be about 500 kilometers long. The head of state said an estimated budget of US$80 billion is needed to execute this project.

"Construction of Jakarta alone is estimated to take 8 to 10 years. If it extends to East Java, the process could take an additional 5 to 10 years," said Prabowo. However, he stated that it would not be a problem. "There is an ancient proverb that says, 'A journey of a thousand kilometers begins with a single step,'" he said.

Furthermore, Prabowo stated that the government will establish the North Coast Sea Wall Authority to execute the giant sea wall project. For the initial step, the government will prioritize the construction of the giant sea wall for the coasts of Jakarta, Semarang, and their surrounding areas. "In DKI (Jakarta), Semarang, Pekalongan, and Brebes, water has already threatened the lives of our people," he said.

Regarding financing, Prabowo is open to potential foreign investors from China, South Korea, Japan, and other countries in Europe and the Middle East. However, Prabowo stated that the government will not wait any longer. "If you want to join, please do so, but know we will not wait. We will rely on our own strength," he said.

Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Coordinator Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) had previously claimed that investors were interested in working on the giant sea wall project. However, he stated that the government is still studying and opening opportunities for all parties.

"We do not want to rush to conclusions because, once again, this is a major project," said AHY during a press conference at the International Conference on Infrastructure (ICI) 2025 at the Jakarta International Convention Center on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

Regarding the funding needs, AHY said the giant sea wall project requires a budget of around Rp123 trillion. However, the budget is currently limited to the construction of the seawall in the Jakarta area. "Approximately 41 kilometers," he said.
