Tasmania Emerges as a Hotspot for Indonesian Tourists

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tasmania, the southernmost state of Australia, has become the new favorite destination for Indonesian travelers visiting the Land Down Under. The state is located on an island of the same name, offering a closer experience with nature and wildlife.

Hendri Yapto, Chief Operations Officer of Dwidaya Tour, stated that the demand for travel to Tasmania has been increasing lately, reflecting the high interest among Indonesians in attending events and sport tourism.

"Tasmania's wildlife is appealing because it's an island itself," Hendri said following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Australia Tourism and Dwidaya Tour in Jakarta on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

National Parks and Rare Wildlife

Tasmania is home to Mount Field National Park, part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage. One of the main attractions in this national park is Russell Falls. It is said that Russell is the most photographed waterfall in Australia. Visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere with the view and sound of the waterfall amidst tall trees.

Nearly 60 percent of Tasmania's land is designated as nature reserves and national parks, 20 percent listed as World Heritage sites. Tourists can explore its 19 national parks, located from the mountains to the coast, with diverse walking tracks.

In Tasmania, tourists can also encounter rare wildlife at the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary is home to kangaroos, Tasmanian devils, wombats, sugar gliders, and rare birds.

Hendri added that Tasmania also attracts Indonesian tourists because of its history. "In Tasmania, there's an old city where the first foreigners arrived in Australia," he said.

Events and Sport Tourism

The increase in Indonesian tourists visiting Australia is also driven by the rapid growth of events and sports tourism. Last year, Sydney and Melbourne hosted Coldplay concerts, each for two days. Australia will also be the destination for the Oasis reunion concert this year. The concert, anticipated by British band fans since their breakup in 2009, will be held in Sydney and Melbourne in October and November 2025.

For sport tourism, the Sydney Marathon has become a popular destination for world runners after being listed as one of the seven World Marathon Majors, alongside the Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, London Marathon, Berlin Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and New York Marathon.

"Sydney just entered the World Marathon Majors this year, and this change in status has led to more people going there," Hendri said.

Hendri mentioned that Dwidaya Tour noted a significant increase in Indonesian tourists vacationing in Australia this year. "Australia is among the top five destinations from all countries. Its growth in the first quarter of this year was around 29 percent compared to last year," he said.
