TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, underscored Indonesia's growing international influence and voiced confidence in its contribution to BRICS during a bilateral meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Konstantinovsky Palace, St. Petersburg, on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
According to a statement from the Indonesian Presidential Secretariat, Putin said Indonesia holds a "strong and influential position on the global stage" and that he believed the country’s presence "would enhance BRICS’ potential and strengthen the bloc’s cooperation mechanisms".
During the meeting, both leaders discussed a range of bilateral and international issues, adopted a cooperation declaration, and signed several key documents. Putin also welcomed the significant growth in trade between the two nations.
He noted that "Indonesia is among Russia's key trading partners in Southeast Asia". Last year, the trade volume between the two countries reached US$4.3 billion, and in the first four months of this year, it had already increased by 40 percent.
On energy cooperation, Russia conveyed its readiness to expand energy supplies to Indonesia. Putin also emphasized the strengthening of cultural and educational ties, mentioning that Russian language education and training centers had been established in Jakarta and Bali. He added that more than 500 Indonesians are currently studying in Russia under existing staff training cooperation.
Earlier in the day, Putin officially welcomed President Prabowo at the Konstantinovsky Palace during Prabowo’s two-day state visit to Russia. He said he was pleased to meet Prabowo in person in St. Petersburg, recalling that their previous meeting in Moscow had occurred before Prabowo's inauguration as president.
Putin also mentioned that Prabowo would take part in the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025 the following day, an event that he said brings together business leaders and politicians from around the world.
In addition, Putin noted Indonesia’s full membership in BRICS and expressed hope that the country would "play a meaningful role in supporting the organization’s activities".
