TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vladimir Putin, in a meeting with Prabowo at St. Petersburg on Thursday, June 19, said Russia is ready to assist Indonesia with nuclear development.
"We are open to interaction with Indonesian partner in the peaceful nuclear development sphere. Joint projects related to non-energy use of nuclear technologies may also be the case in point—in healthcare, agriculture, and training of human resources," Putin said in a joint statement.
Putin also expressed Russia's interest in cooperating with Indonesia in other advanced fields such as space exploration, smart cities, and artificial intelligence.
Putin called Indonesia one of Russia's key partners in the Asia-Pacific region. According to Putin, Indonesia and Russia's bilateral ties are developed on the basis of "long-standing traditions of friendship and mutual assistance."
"This year, we are celebrating 75 years of bilateral relations. Our country has facilitated the state-building process and supported the positioning of the young Republic of Indonesia on the international stage," Putin said.
On the same occasion, President Prabowo acknowledged the long-standing history between Indonesia and Russia, calling it an important partner in various sectors. Even when it was newly independent and still poor, the Soviet Union provided significant assistance to Indonesia.
"To this day, the Indonesian people have not forgotten Russia's assistance. Not only in our capital city, but also in our major cities, there are numerous large buildings, bridges, railways, and factories built with Russia's assistance," Prabowo said.
According to Prabowo, Russia was considerate of Indonesia's poor state at the time and did not demand the country swiftly repay the debt. Nevertheless, he said, Indonesia managed to repay them several decades later.
Prabowo also underscored the progress in the bilateral relations between Indonesia and Russia, especially in the economic sector. Both countries have participated in the Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement.
"So, thank you, President Putin. There has been a lot of progress in this relationship and thank you for inviting me as a guest of honor to the St. Petersburg Forum," Prabowo said.
Prior to meeting Putin, Prabowo participated in a ceremony to pay respects and lay a wreath at the Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery, Saint Petersburg, Russia, on Thursday, June 19, 2025. The wreath-laying ceremony symbolized the respect for the millions of World War II victims who perished in the Siege of Leningrad.
After meeting Putin, Prabowo is scheduled to be one of the speakers at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) 2025 on June 20.
