TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Hajj Organizing Agency has said that the Saudi government has not yet officially announced Indonesia's hajj quota for 2026. Deputy Head of the agency, Dahnil Anzar Simanjuntak, admitted he does not know the reason for the delay.
"Until today, we still don't know the reason why the Hajj quota has not been announced," Dahnil told reporters at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. The Saudi government had initially planned to release the quota this week.
Dahnil, who is also a politician from the Gerindra Party, mentioned that the Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah is scheduled to visit Indonesia from August 4 to 6. "We don't know, maybe it will be announced then. But clearly, until today, I still don't know why it has not been announced," he said.
The delay has raised speculation that the 2026 hajj quota might be reduced due to issues during the 2025 pilgrimage. However, the agency has denied this assumption.
Dahnil stated that, as of now, Indonesia’s hajj quota for next year remains at 221,000, the same as in 2025.
"Yesterday, when Mr. Head of the Hajj Organizing Agency (Mochammad Irfan Yusuf) met with the Ministry of Hajj, the temporary quota seemed to remain the same," he said.
Minister of Religious Affairs Nasaruddin Umar previously stated that although the quota for the 1447 H/2026 M hajj season has not been officially confirmed, there are signs it will be maintained or possibly increased.
"The quota for next year will be determined in due time. But the initial indications, the Saudi government, Insha Allah, will maintain the minimum quota that exists now. But there are efforts by Saudi Arabia to increase the quota, even," Nasaruddin said, as quoted by Antara on Monday, July 14, 2025.
He noted that the indication of an increase aligns with infrastructure developments at key locations used during the pilgrimage. Saudi Arabia is currently building new facilities, particularly in Mina, which is the most densely populated area during the peak of the hajj season.
Towers are being constructed to replace the tents previously used as pilgrim shelters. "The target is that in the coming years, the number of tents will decrease, but there will be more apartments standing there," he said.
Aside from accommodation upgrades, Saudi Arabia is also expanding its transportation infrastructure. Projects include road widening and planned flyovers to ease congestion during the pilgrimage.
Nasaruddin added that expansion efforts are also ongoing at the Masjid al-Haram, the Prophet’s Mosque, and other major religious sites including areas used for tawaf, sa’i, and the jamarat ritual.
"Even the airport is being expanded. The old airport will be reactivated and alternative airports near Thaif are also being prepared," he said.
He emphasized that these improvements show the Saudi government’s commitment to shortening hajj waiting times, especially for countries like Indonesia that have long queues.
