TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a tectonic earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 jolted Papua New Guinea on Tuesday night, May 20, 2025.
BMKG's analysis shows that the quake's epicenter is located at coordinates 3.67 S; 144.82 E, or on the northern coast of Papua New Guinea, at a depth of 56 kilometers.
"Based on the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the tremor is categorized as a shallow earthquake, triggered by the activity of the Sorong Fault that extended towards the Bismarck Sea," said Daryono, BMKG's director of Earthquake and Tsunami Center, in a written statement on Wednesday, May 21, 2025.
Daryono stated that the mechanism of the Papua New Guinea earthquake is oblique normal-fault.
BMKG has not recorded any aftershock activity thus far.
The earthquake was felt by the residents of Wewak, East Sepik Province, with an intensity of III-IV on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale, meaning the tremor was actively experienced by many people indoors.
No damage so far has been reported due to the earthquake, and it did not affect the Indonesian region.
"There is no tsunami threat. This earthquake did not affect seismic activity in Indonesian regions," said the BMKG officer.
