Trump Mulls Joining Israeli Strikes on Iran's Nuclear Sites

7 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Donald Trump is leaning towards authorizing U.S. military strikes against Iran's nuclear facilities, as reported by U.S. media on Tuesday, as cited by Anadolu.

Quoting two officials familiar with the ongoing discussions, CNN reported that Trump is starting to dislike the idea of a diplomatic solution to end the escalating conflict.

"Trump had, for now, moved away from the idea of dispatching top officials to a mutually agreed upon location in the Middle East to meet with the Iranians and attempt to hash out a deal," the report cited officials as saying.

Axios reported on Monday that the U.S. is in talks with Iran about the possibility of a meeting this week between U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Separately, quoting an official, Fox News reported on Tuesday that U.S. strikes on targets inside Iran, including nuclear facilities, are "on the table."

Trump abruptly left the G7 summit on Monday night, departing a day early. He stated that Tehran must be evacuated "immediately."

"I’m not too much in the mood to negotiate with Iran," Trump told reporters on Air Force One on his return from Canada.

Earlier on Tuesday, Trump said Iran no longer has control over its airspace.

"We now have complete and total control of the skies over Iran," he said, adding that Washington knows "exactly" where Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is, saying he is safe "for now" while warning that "our patience is wearing thin."

Trump met with his national security advisers on Tuesday in the White House Situation Room.

Previously, U.S. intelligence assessments had reached different conclusions from Israel. Iran is not actively pursuing nuclear weapons and would need up to three more years to produce and deliver nuclear weapons to chosen targets, according to four people familiar with the assessment.

Another senior US official told CNN that Iran is "about as close as you can get before building (a nuclear weapon). If Iran wanted one, they have all the things they need."
