TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump said the decision on whether Israel will fully occupy Gaza lies solely with the Israeli government. He made the statement in response to questions about reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu plans to seize control of the entire Palestinian territory.
“As far as the rest of it, I really can’t say. That’s going to be pretty much up to Israel,” Trump said on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, as quoted by Al Jazeera.
Trump Prioritizes Food Aid for Gaza
Trump emphasized that his top priority is delivering food aid to the people of Gaza, acknowledging the worsening humanitarian crisis caused by widespread hunger. As reported by The Times of Israel, he said his primary focus is on feeding Gazans “who are obviously not doing too well with the food.”
He added that Israel would assist in both the distribution and funding of the aid. Arab countries, he said, are also expected to contribute financially and support the delivery of humanitarian assistance.
Although the White House previously announced plans to launch a new aid distribution initiative in Gaza, the plan has yet to be implemented. Eight days ago, Trump said the US would build new food distribution centers in the region.
According to Al Jazeera, Israel has issued forced evacuation orders that have displaced Palestinians into increasingly confined areas, turning about 86 percent of Gaza into a military zone.
Further expansion of military operations into the remaining areas is raising fears of an even greater humanitarian catastrophe, as civilians already face near-daily bombardments and starvation.
Humanitarian Concerns and US Support
The prospect of a full Israeli occupation of Gaza is also drawing concern for the safety of Israeli hostages still held by Hamas and other Palestinian factions.
Miroslav Jenca, a senior United Nations official, warned the UN Security Council that full occupation would likely lead to a humanitarian disaster.
“International law is clear in the regard. Gaza is and must remain an integral part of the future Palestinian state,” he said.
Since the war began in October 2023, the United States has supplied Israel with billions of dollars in military aid, with even more support delivered during the latest escalation in Gaza.
Earlier this year, Trump sparked international outrage after proposing that Gaza be depopulated and transformed into a tourism hub—what he called a “riviera of the Middle East.”
Critics condemned the proposal as a form of ethnic cleansing, especially given that Netanyahu had also suggested the mass expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza.
Amid a blockade on humanitarian aid since March, US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) sites have become one of the few remaining sources of food.
However, multiple reports indicate that Israeli forces have opened fire on Palestinians attempting to reach these aid centers, resulting in hundreds of deaths.
