TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesia U-23 national team is set to duel against Malaysia in the final match of Group A of the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, July 21, 2025. The two teams are scheduled to kick off at 8:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time) and will be aired on Indosiar and streamed on Vidio.

This football match between Indonesia and Malaysia is colored by a strong rivalry, especially since this encounter will determine which team advances to the semifinals. Both teams have an equal chance of securing a spot in the final four of this U-23 ASEAN Championship.

The Young Garuda, who have recorded two previous victories against Brunei Darussalam (8-0) and the Philippines (1-0), currently top Group A with six points. Meanwhile, the Young Tigers of Malaya are in third place with three points after a 7-1 win over Brunei following a 0-2 defeat to the Philippines in the first match.

Indonesia U-23 National Team coach Gerald Vanenburg is aware of the strong rivalry in the match against Malaysia, but he emphasizes that his focus is on preparing his team to achieve victory.

"I think the most important thing is for us to show respect to Malaysia. We will try to defeat them in the way we want to play," said the 61-year-old coach.

Gerald is optimistic about defeating the Young Tigers of Malaya in this match. "We know that Malaysia is a strong team. But we will compete and try to win," he said.

On the other hand, the Malaysia U-23 team is ready to face Indonesia. Their motivation has increased after a significant victory over Brunei Darussalam. According to the players of the Young Tigers of Malaya, this result is proof of what they are capable of.

Following that victory, Malaysia U-23 player Haqimi Azim stated that he and his teammates are preparing to face Indonesia. "Playing in Indonesia, we will do our best and give 100 percent later," said the 22-year-old Kuala Lumpur City player, as quoted by Antara.

Head to Head Record

In the history of the AFF U-23 Cup, the Indonesia vs. Malaysia encounter on Monday will be the third meeting. In the previous two matches, the Young Garuda never emerged victorious.

The first meeting took place in the 2019 edition when Indonesia became the champion under the guidance of Indra Sjafri. The second encounter between these two teams ended in a 2-2 draw in the group stage on February 20, 2019. At that time, the Young Garuda took a two-goal lead through Marinus Wanewar and Witan Sulaeman before a comeback.

The Indonesia U-23 national team once again met Malaysia in the group stage of the 2023 AFF U-23 Cup. In that match, the Red and White team lost 1-2 despite taking the lead through a goal by Ramadhan Sananta.

Estimated Line-up

Indonesia U-23 National Team: Muhammad Ardiansyah, Muhammad Ferarri, Kadek Arel, Achmad Maulana, Dony Tri Pamungkas, Robi Darwis, Toni Firmansyah, Arkhan Fikri, Rayhan Hannan, Rahmat Arjuna, Jens Raven.

Match Prediction

The Indonesia U-23 national team is predicted to be able to defeat Malaysia in the final match of the group stage of the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup. The two previous victories serve as crucial momentum for Jens Raven and his teammates to secure three wins in Group A.

However, the Malaysia U-23 national team cannot be underestimated. They have good quality in executing swift counterattacks. Indonesia's defensive line must remain solid to contain the attacks of the Young Tigers of Malaya.

In this match, Gerald Vanenburg's team has the advantage of playing at home. With full support from the spectators at the stadium, the Young Garuda players are believed to be able to perform at their best and achieve victory.
