TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A heat dome has hit parts of the United States. According to USA Today on June 17, 2025, some areas could reach temperatures exceeding 37.7 degrees Celsius. Meteorologist Jonathan Erdman explained that the average heat due to a heat dome occurs twice a year.
The heat wave appeared across the Plains in America on June 20, 2025. The Plains is a wide area with a relatively flat surface. The heat intensified in some Midwest and Great Lakes regions over the weekend. The hot temperatures extend throughout the Ohio Valley, Northeast, and Mid-Atlantic.
According to Erdman, changes in temperature flow patterns cause the heat wave. Specifically, a heat dome has formed in the eastern part of the United States. This is a kind of strong, high-pressure system. "Sinking air near the center of this heat dome suppresses clouds, allowing the intense sunshine this time of year to heat the ground and air above it," he said.
What is a Heat Dome?
A heat dome is a high-pressure system that traps heat. They typically occur in parts of Europe in mid-June. Some other countries include Greece, Spain, and France.
The temperatures will remain high at night. Warm nights only offer a little relief from the heat. The heat wave will continue in the southeastern region of England. The sea temperatures in the southwest waters of England have also risen two degrees above average.
According to the Financial Times on Thursday, June 26, 2025, climate expert Richard Allan from the University of Reading said regions in the western Mediterranean will become hotter. This is supported by increasing levels of greenhouse gases caused by human activities. He said the Earth is finding it increasingly difficult to release excess heat into space. While a warmer atmosphere tends to dry out the land. This means heat waves are becoming more severe, making the heat extreme.
The heat dome affecting the eastern and central parts of America could reach temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
