Why OpenAI Creates 'ChatGPT for Teens' Feature

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - OpenAI has finally launched a dedicated service for underaged youths, ChatGPT for Teens, which promises an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that's claimed to be more teen-friendly.

The product pledges to include additional security measures and address the education crisis stemming from the numerous instances of ChatGPT-assisted cheating in schools.

As reported by TechCrunch on Tuesday, ChatGPT for Teens introduces a new Study Mode and various other features designed to encourage teen users to engage in assignments and solve problems rather than simply seeking quick answers from AI.

The Study Mode option will provide teens with guided questions and step-by-step support to help them understand the learning material.

This mode will also provide teen users with special reminders that will appear if they attempt to cheat rather than understand the learning material.

This dedicated app will also support learning using visualizations and quizzes, allowing parents or guardians to control when Study Mode will automatically launch.

OpenAI stated that age-appropriate protections will now be automatically enabled in its ChatGPT service for teens, designed to reduce exposure to harmful or developmentally inappropriate content. These measures are based on OpenAI's Under 18 Principles.

Parents can also use previously introduced family features and parental controls to manage settings and receive safety notifications.

The ChatGPT app for teens comes after at least a year of widespread lawsuits against AI companies over the impact of chatbots on teens' safety and mental health.
