Chronology of Lost iPhone Case on Garuda Indonesia Flight GA716 Jakarta-Melbourne

20 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Garuda Indonesia has temporarily dismissed all cabin crew of flight GA 716 on the Jakarta-Melbourne route on June 6, 2025. This decision was made after a passenger reported the loss of their iPhone that was last known to be around the aircraft crew.

Ade R. Susardi, Garuda Indonesia's Director of Commerce, said they are conducting a comprehensive investigation with the relevant stakeholders, including airport authorities and local police. "To facilitate the investigation process, all cabin crew members on duty have been temporarily dismissed from flight duties," Ade said in a written statement on Monday, June 9, 2025.

According to Ade, the flight crew followed standard procedures upon receiving the report, and the search was conducted together with airport officials. The airline accompanied the passenger in submitting an official report to the Australian police.

Losing the Phone

Michael Tjendara was the passenger who lost his phone on the flight. In his Instagram post (@michaeltjendara), Michael explained that he had placed his iPhone in the pocket of seat 30D during takeoff from Jakarta on June 6, 2025. Afterward, he moved to seat 32E to rest during the flight.

After the aircraft landed at Melbourne Airport at 10:55 am local time, Michael realized that his phone was not in its previous storage place. He immediately reported the incident to the cabin crew. However, at that time, passengers were already allowed to disembark, so the search inside the aircraft could not be continued.

Michael then tracked the location of his iPhone using the Find My iPhone feature. Around 11:26-11:48 am, the phone was briefly detected at Terminal 2 of Melbourne Airport. He then reported to the Garuda Indonesia office and met with the Station Manager named Samuel and airport staff. They also filed a report with the airport's Lost and Found department.

Phone Detected at the Crew's Hotel

At about 1:02 pm, Michael reported that his phone was detected at the Mercure Southbank Hotel. He immediately went to the hotel with his family and driver. The hotel manager confirmed to Michael that only Garuda GA716 crew had checked in there, numbering around 20 people. "No other passengers," Michael wrote.

Michael then contacted Samuel and Garuda Melbourne's General Manager, Ridho, who then came to the hotel. A search was conducted in several crew rooms, but not all rooms were inspected, according to him. Until 3:54 pm, the iPhone was still detected inside the hotel.

Phone Detected in Yarra River

At around 4:00 pm, all Garuda crew left the hotel. Shortly after that, at 4:42 pm, Michael mentioned that the phone was detected on the edge of the Yarra River, about 100 meters from the hotel. Together with Samuel and Ridho, he searched around the Southbank Promenade. He checked trash cans, bushes, and drains. "At 5:23 pm, the phone was still tracked at the riverbank," he wrote. "At 7:33 pm local time, the last position of the iPhone was located in the middle of the Yarra River."

Garuda Indonesia reaffirms its commitment to thoroughly follow up on this incident. "We continue to communicate with the passenger and will accompany him until the process is completed, as part of our commitment to ensuring the safety and comfort of all passengers," said Ade.
