Tom Felton to Reprise 'Harry Potter' Role on Broadway Stage

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - After more than two decades of playing Draco Malfoy in the 'Harry Potter' films, Tom Felton will be bringing the character back to life, this time on the Broadway stage. He will appear in the production of 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' from November 11, 2025, to March 22, 2026.

"I think we all thought that the fandom flame might be doused over the years, but clearly it’s not," Felton told Variety in an interview at the Tony Awards on Sunday, June 8, 2025. Felton stated that the most exciting part of this project is being able to perform live on stage.

He compared the production process of the film, which took about nine months, with the more streamlined stage version that is reimagined as a new and "very loving" story.

"And I get to be a dad, which is really fun," he exclaimed.

Learning Magic on Broadway Stage

Felton admitted that the process of performing magic on stage is starkly different from in the films. He told the creative team of the Broadway production that he didn't want to dig deep into the special effects.

The 1987-born actor then revealed that "They said, ‘Well, you’re going to have to because there’s so many physical tricks," unlike the green screen-heavy production of films.

'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' takes place 19 years after the final story in the seventh book, 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.' The main characters, such as Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Draco are now adults and taking their children to Hogwarts. Felton is the first actor from the Harry Potter franchise to appear in the Broadway stage version. He is scheduled to perform for 19 weeks.

Responding to the J.K. Rowling's Controversies

Despite the Harry Potter franchise remaining popular with a Broadway production and an HBO original series underway, author J.K. Rowling remains infamous for her controversies.

According to People, Rowling has been under fire since June 2020 after expressing support for anti-transgender sentiments. She has subsequently made similar statements about the transgender community.

Several actors from the Harry Potter franchise, including Daniel Radcliffe, have spoken out against Rowling. But when asked if he's affected by the controversy surrounding the author's views, Felton said, "No, I can't say it does. I'm not really that attuned," he told Variety.

Felton chose to highlight the positive impact of Rowling's work. "The only thing I always remind myself is that I've been lucky enough to travel the world. Here I am in New York. And I have not seen anything bring the world together more than Potter," he said.

Felton said that J.K. Rowling is the one who created the Harry Potter world that unites many people, and for that, he's "incredibly grateful."
