TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Governor of West Java, Dedi Mulyadi, reminded that the environmental problems in his region will have an impact on Jakarta and Banten if they are not promptly addressed.
He explained that 70 percent of Jakarta's clean water supply comes from Jatiluhur Reservoir, West Java. "The water source of Jatiluhur comes from Mount Wayang and Windu in Bandung Regency, which are currently experiencing degradation," said Dedi at the Forum for Regional Cooperation of Partner and Leading Regions (FKD-MPU) event at Hotel Borobudur on Tuesday, 17th June 2025.
The Gerindra Party politician mentioned that deforestation has occurred in West Java due to poor spatial planning and changes in tea commodity prices. As a result, there has been a shift in behavior, from being tea farmers to now becoming vegetable farmers.
According to Dedi, if this issue is not immediately addressed through reforestation, regulating residents living on the mountains, and restoring tea prices, "it will certainly pose a threat to Jakarta in the future, not just in terms of clean water and energy crises," said Dedi.
Dedi said that the partners in this regional cooperation forum must align economic growth with environmental recovery to avoid conflicting interests in each region. "Regional cooperation is needed, including with Jakarta and Banten, not only in a formal aspect, but also substantially," said Dedi.
Road Damage in Parung Panjang
Prior to this, Dedi Mulyadi also highlighted the damage in Parung Panjang District, Bogor, West Java. According to Dedi, the residents in that area suffer due to mining activities for building materials for various projects in the neighboring provinces of Jakarta and Banten.
Dedi mentioned that Parung Panjang has been the main source of building materials for large-scale projects in Jakarta and Banten. "Hotels and luxury housing areas have emerged, providing an economic multiplier effect for the environment, increasing regional tax revenue," said Dedi at the Governor's Forum for Regional Cooperation of Partner and Leading Regions at Hotel Borobudur, Sawah Besar, Jakarta on Tuesday, 17th June 2025.
However, according to Dedi, the mining traffic in Parung Panjang has had a negative impact on its residents. "The infrastructure is completely ruined, and the residents suffer from respiratory problems," said Dedi.
He also regretted that the development outside of Parung Panjang has not been able to provide equivalent benefits for the surrounding communities. Yet, he mentioned, the growth of development in Jakarta and Banten has created new wealthy individuals in the property sector. "(But) it has generated poverty and residual development, causing suffering for the people of West Java," he said.
Mining activities in Parung Panjang are generally carried out for non-metallic materials such as sand, crushed stone, and fill soil. According to Dedi, the high traffic of material-carrying trucks in the area has quickly deteriorated Parung Panjang's roads. Additionally, the pollution resulting from the mining and material trucks has led to respiratory diseases among the residents.
Dedi mentioned that proper infrastructure development in Parung Panjang requires up to Rp 1.2 trillion. However, he stated that the West Java Provincial Government cannot bear all of these costs. "It is impossible for West Java to allocate Rp 1.2 trillion for the recovery of one district, considering the vast number of districts, more than 600," he said.
Therefore, Dedi Mulyadi said that West Java, Jakarta, and Banten need to come up with a joint solution to address the issues in Parung Panjang. "There must be a collective recovery effort."
