TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has officially designated the Dieng Plateau as a national geopark. This decision is stated in Decree Number 172.K/GL.01/MEM.G/2025 issued on May 7, 2025.
"Alhamdulillah, Dieng has become one of the national geoparks, it has been designated. This is a source of pride for all of us, and we hope it motivates us to preserve the environment, cultural heritage, and culture there," said the Head of the Tourism and Culture Office (Dinparbud) of Banjarnegara Regency, Tursiman, in Banjarnegara as quoted from Antara, on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.
Tursiman explained that the Dieng Geopark encompasses many aspects, such as geology and ecology, rather than focusing on one aspect. As reported on the visitjawatengah.jatengprov.go.id page, the Dieng National Geopark area consists of 23 Geological Diversity sites (Geosites), 8 Biological Diversity sites (Biosites), 10 Cultural Diversity sites (Cultural Sites), and 6 other attractive destinations.
A geopark is a sustainable development model that combines three types of diversity: geological, biological, and cultural, as quoted from esdm.go.id. Its management aims to develop the local economy based on protecting the three types of diversity found in the area.
Attractions of Dieng
It should be noted that the Dieng Plateau is a tourist destination in Banjarnegara, Central Java. In addition to presenting stunning natural panoramas from about 2,000 meters above sea level, Dieng also has a rich history and culture, with 8th-century Hindu temples. What is unique about Dieng is that the air temperature can even reach 0 Celsius during the dry season.
Here are some attractions of Dataran Tinggi Dieng.
- Telaga Warna: An icon of Dieng tourism and unique in that its sulfur-containing lake water can change color due to sunlight.
- Telaga Pengilon: Pengilon means "mirror" because its water is so clear that visitors can see their reflections in it.
- Kawah Sikidang: Kawah Sikidang offers visitors a view of an active volcanic crater. Visitors can see a hot spring lake and sulfur gas emissions in the crater.
- Candi Arjuna: Candi Arjuna is an 8th-9th-century Hindu temple in the Dieng Plateau. It is part of the Candi Arjuna Complex, which includes Candi Arjuna, Candi Semar, Candi Srikandi, Candi Puntadewa, and Candi Sembadra.

- Dieng Plateau Theater: It provides visitors who want to know more about the stories of Dieng Plateau with a documentary film.
- Dieng Cultural Festival: A ritual of cutting children's dreadlocks in Dieng.
In addition to visiting these locations, visitors can also enjoy the dense forest panorama at Telaga Dringo and see the local farming system, such as the water source performance of Telaga Merdada in the local rice field area that can only hold rainwater.
