TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Looking for a unique way to spend the weekend with family? Consider a visit to one of Jakarta's museums, many of which are offering engaging activities, some specifically designed for children.
Beyond mere sightseeing, visiting museums can also provide knowledge. Depending on the museum you choose, both children and adults can learn about history and other topics, making it a pleasant experience for tourists.
Here are some exciting activities in Jakarta museums this weekend.
1. Jakarta History Museum: Follow the Path of Oentoeng Soerapati
The Jakarta History Museum, also known as Fatahillah Museum, presents a special children's program called the Do It Yourself (DIY) Trail. In this program, children and their parents can go on an adventure to uncover intriguing aspects of the museum.
This week, participants can follow in the footsteps of Oentoeng Soerapati, a national hero who spearheaded resistance against the VOC (Dutch East India Company).
During this mission, children will be tasked with solving puzzles and navigating hidden mazes throughout the museum's exhibits. Visitors interested in joining this adventure can register via the link provided on the museum's Instagram page. The event is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM.
2. Jakarta Maritime Museum: Find Serenity Through Meditation
If you are looking for a calm experience in a museum, you can visit the Maritime Museum located in Penjaringan, North Jakarta. On Saturday, May 31, 2025, the museum will host a meditation event with the theme "Hening, Breathing and Healing" (Silent, Breathing and Healing). The goal is to provide visitors with a respite from the relentless energy of Jakarta.
This event invites participants to engage in meditation accompanied by the soothing aromas of Nusantara spices, express their emotions through art, and embrace a slower pace of life that fosters inner peace. The event, commencing at 10:00 AM, is open to the public.
3. Museum MACAN: Explore "The Sea is Barely Wrinkled" and "Pointing to the Synchronous Windows" Exhibitions
Museum MACAN is currently showing a solo exhibition by Kei Imazu, a Japanese artist who lives in Bandung, titled "The Sea is Barely Wrinkled." This exhibition is open from May 24 to October 5, 2025.
"The Sea is Barely Wrinkled" is based on Imazu's ongoing research about the Sunda Kelapa area in North Jakarta. The exhibition highlights the sinking of the Batavia ship in 1629 off the coast of Western Australia, a historical event that symbolizes the failure of colonial ambitions when faced with the unyielding forces of nature.
Additionally, Museum MACAN presents "Pointing to the Synchronous Windows," on display from May 24 to October 5, 2025. Featuring 50 works by both Indonesian and international artists, this exhibition explores the dynamic and interconnected relationship between the human body and the spaces we inhabit.
4. Betawi Setu Babakan Museum: Experience Astronomy Night
Astronomy enthusiasts are invited by the Jakarta Planetarium and Observatory to observe celestial objects at the Betawi Setu Babakan Museum on Saturday, May 31, 2025, starting at 4:30 PM. Visitors can enjoy a Mini Planetarium show and participate in stargazing within the Betawi Cultural Village area of Setu Babakan, South Jakarta. Observable objects include the planet Mars, the Moon, and several bright stars visible in the evening sky.
5. Textile Museum: Discover "Catur Kultur pada Wastra Indonesia"
The Textile Museum and the Indonesian Textile Museum Association present the exhibition "Catur Kultur pada Wastra Indonesia" (the major influence of 4 civilizations on Indonesian textiles) from May 27 to July 20, 2025.
Located in Kota Bambu, Palmerah, West Jakarta, this exhibition illuminates the influence of Chinese, Indian, Islamic, and European cultures on Indonesian textiles through their motifs, techniques, and philosophical symbolism.
