TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The High-Level Conference of the G7 Summit took place in Canada from June 15 to 17, 2025. Leaders of G7 countries attended the summit while global tariff wars, conflicts in the Middle East, and tensions in Eastern Europe continued to unfold.
According to Antara, the summit was attended by seven permanent members: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The European Union, though not an official member, was also permitted to take part in the discussions.
On Monday, world leaders participating in the G7 summit in Canada called on US President Donald Trump to end his trade war, warning that it threatens global economic stability.
As reported by CNA, the Canadian hosts chose not to provoke Trump by concentrating on Middle East conflicts. Despite this, the leaders continued to urge Trump to roll back the increased import tariffs by next month.
Collaboration
While seated around the meeting table, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the importance of cooperation and shared prosperity to shape a better future.
"We might not agree on absolutely every issue. But where we will cooperate, we will make an enormous difference for citizens and for the world, and bring the next era of prosperity, I hope, to the benefit of those we serve," Carney said.
Trump's Early Departure
US President Donald Trump unexpectedly announced his early departure from the G7 summit on Monday night. He flew back to Washington shortly after posting a message on social media that appeared to hint at escalating violence in the Israel-Iran conflict.
As he stood for photos with fellow G7 leaders before heading to the airport, Trump told reporters that the situation in the Middle East required urgent attention.
"I have to go back as soon as possible," the president said, adding that his early departure was unrelated to the summit itself, which proceeded with a dinner that evening and continued with more meetings on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
Prabowo's Absence
Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto, who was invited as a guest, did not attend the summit. Head of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Hasan Nasbi clarified that Prabowo’s absence had nothing to do with political alignment.
Hasan explained that the scheduling conflict with several other strategic engagements was the main reason for the president’s absence. These included planned state visits to Russia and Singapore from June 16 to 20, 2025.
"The President has received numerous honorary invitations from various countries. However, some of them overlap in timing and are far from each other-Canada, Russia, and Singapore. The government certainly appreciates all of these invitations," Hasan said on Monday, June 16, 2025.
Global Economy and Energy Security
On Sunday, June 15, 2025, the G7 Summit agenda placed emphasis on global economic issues and energy security. Although originally scheduled for three days, the summit was shortened to two and officially began on Monday, June 16, 2025.
Monday’s schedule included a 90-minute discussion among G7 leaders on global economic prospects, followed by a lunch meeting on energy security with the invited guest leaders.
