Google Launches News Showcase in Indonesia, Partners with 34 Media Outlets

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Google News, a news aggregator service from Google, has officially launched a new feature called "News Showcase" or Google News Showcase in Indonesia. The announcement was made by Kate Beddoe, Managing Director of News Partnerships at Google Asia Pacific, through a post on Google’s official blog on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

The feature aims to help users access curated, high-quality news from trusted sources, while also supporting the growth of the local journalism ecosystem.

In the initial phase of its launch in Indonesia, Google has partnered with 34 media organizations, including both national and local outlets.

"News Showcase" will be presented in the form of panels featuring curated news selected directly by the editorial teams of each media partner. These panels are accessible via the Google News app, the Discover tab on Android and iOS devices, and the web version.

"We have been looking forward to News Showcase in Indonesia, as we see this as a place to find curated quality journalism that can help the Indonesian people access credible and trustworthy news. By providing glimpses of some of our premium content, we believe we can attract many potential subscribers and increase their loyalty," said Wahyu Dhyatmika, Chief Executive Officer of Tempo Infomedia Digital, as quoted from the official Google website.

Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital of Indonesia, Nezar Patria, expressed his support, stating, "We welcome Google's commitment to support the sustainability of the media ecosystem in Indonesia and align with the mandate of the President's Regulation to strengthen the national press industry."

Originally launched in late 2020, the News Showcase feature is designed to improve the presentation of online news. It enables publishers to highlight their editorial voice in a more curated and in-depth format.

As part of a global content licensing initiative, Google provides financial compensation to publishers for delivering quality journalism. This effort not only enriches the user experience but also enhances the connection between media outlets and their audiences by giving publishers control over the display and branding of their content.

News Showcase also supports more contextual storytelling through features such as timelines, related articles, and key points. Available in both Google News and Discover, the feature provides a platform for a range of publishers—including award-winning media outlets—to share both local and international news in a deeper and more engaging way.
