TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said the recent attacks on Iran by Israel not only violated territorial sovereignty but also posed a threat to international security. Israel notoriously targeted Iran's nuclear development facilities during last month's attacks.
According to Sugiono, international law dictates that nuclear installations must not be targeted in an attack. "We also condemn the attack on nuclear installations, as international law clearly dictates they must not be targeted," said Sugiono during a working meeting with the Indonesian House of Representatives Commission I at the Parliamentary Complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday, June 30, 2025.
This Gerindra Party politician mentioned that the attack poses risks to human security and the environment as well as threatens the regime and treaty of nuclear weapon non-proliferation.
Iran and Israel have been involved in armed conflict since Tel Aviv launched its strikes on Tehran on June 13, 2025. The aggression included airstrikes and infiltration of sabotage groups targeting nuclear facilities, as well as prominent nuclear generals and scientists, and Iranian airbases. Israel accused Iran of secretly running a military nuclear program, something that high-ranking Iranian officials have denied multiple times.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Washington had joined Israel's efforts to destroy Iran's nuclear program capability by announcing attacks on the Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan sites on Saturday, June 21. Trump stated that a total and comprehensive ceasefire would mark the end of the "12-day war." Washington's maneuver was met with international condemnation.
The Indonesian Foreign Ministry has yet to issue an open statement condemning the United States. When asked after the meeting whether his condemnation included the United States, Sugiono reaffirmed his stance as conveyed during the House meeting.
"Indonesia declared the condemnation against any attacks that violate the sovereignty of any country, especially the one carried out by Israel. It is a violation of a country's territory and sovereignty," he said during the meeting.
Former member of Commission I also conveyed that Indonesia's stance in responding to the current geopolitical situation is consistent: it rejects all forms of colonization. In addition, Indonesia also strives to actively contribute to world peace, as mandated by the constitution.
According to Sugiono, President Prabowo Subianto has underscored the importance of the politics of the good neighbor as part of the strategy to maintain the nation's survival.
