Iran Bans IAEA Chief from Entering Its Territory for Nuclear Monitoring

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Saturday that his country will not allow the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi, to enter Iran and install surveillance cameras at their nuclear facilities.

"We will not allow the IAEA to install cameras at our nuclear facilities, and Grossi is prohibited from entering Iran," said Araghchi as quoted by IRNA news agency.

The ban comes after increased tension between Tehran and the UN nuclear watchdog over monitoring access and transparency following the recent military strikes by Israel and the United States. This move follows the approval of a law by the parliament on Wednesday to cease cooperation with the IAEA.

Araghchi accuses Rafael Grossi of "betraying his duties" by pressing to visit Tehran's nuclear facilities that were bombed by the United States, despite knowing that there was no weapon development there. "The IAEA and its Director-General (Rafael Grossi) are fully responsible for this regrettable situation," he said.

"Grossi's demand to visit the (nuclear) facilities, under the pretext of protection, is meaningless, and may even be malicious. Iran has the right to take any steps to defend its interests, its people, and its sovereignty," Araghchi emphasized.

A 12-day war between Israel and Iran broke out on June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian military, nuclear, and civilian sites. The attacks killed at least 606 people and injured 5,332, according to the Iranian Ministry of Health.

In retaliation, Tehran launched missiles and drone attacks on Israel, killing at least 29 people and injuring more than 3,400, according to figures released by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The conflict ceased under a US-sponsored ceasefire that took effect on June 24.
