TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intends to expand the military attacks and assert control over the entire territory of Gaza. This was revealed by the Israeli television station, Channel 12, on Monday, August 5, 2025, which cited a source from his office.
According to Israeli media, as quoted by Al Arabiya, Netanyahu is scheduled to hold a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, to make a final decision. Reuters also quoted a senior Israeli source who stated that the use of greater force is a potential option.
The potential for escalation comes after a visit from U.S. envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, who was working with the Israeli government to end the war in Gaza. However, Israeli officials have reportedly proposed ideas that include expanding military attacks and annexing parts of the devastated enclave.
This move stands in stark contrast to the recently failed ceasefire negotiations in Doha, which were aimed at securing a U.S.-backed 60-day truce. The proposed ceasefire would have involved delivering aid to Gaza, releasing half of the hostages held by Hamas, and, in return, releasing Palestinian detainees held in Israel.
A senior Israeli official noted that an agreement began to emerge between Washington and Israel following Netanyahu's meeting with Witkoff. The conditions for ending the war, as set by Israel, include the release of hostages, the disarmament of Hamas, and the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip.
Simultaneously, Qatar and Egypt have backed a joint declaration from France and Saudi Arabia, which outlines a pathway toward a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The proposal also called on Hamas to surrender its weapons to the Palestinian Authority.
Although Hamas has repeatedly refused to disarm, three Hamas officials have reportedly informed mediators that the group is willing to relinquish control of the Gaza government in favor of a non-partisan governing body. The officials stressed that any post-war arrangement for Gaza must be decided by Palestinian residents themselves, not by foreign powers.
