TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - James Harden’s return to the Cleveland Cavaliers is moving closer after the team completed its deal for Peyton Watson, leaving the veteran guard with a clearer picture of what his next contract could look like.
Harden opted out of his $42.3 million player option for the 2026-27 season and has remained unsigned while Cleveland worked to strengthen its roster.
The Cavaliers’ latest move, a sign-and-trade that brings Watson from the Denver Nuggets on a four-year, $88 million deal, has now given them roughly $28.4 million in room below the NBA’s first salary-cap apron.
So, how much could James Harden earn in his new Cavaliers deal? Here’s what to know, according to Yahoo! Sports.
How Much Can Harden Make?
Cleveland currently has about $28.4 million available below the first apron, meaning Harden could receive a starting salary in that range.
Salary-cap analyst Yossi Gozlan calculated the Cavaliers’ room at $28.4 million, while other estimates have put it at around $29 million. Cleveland could potentially create additional flexibility by waiving and stretching Cam Whitmore’s contract.
That could allow Harden’s starting salary to approach $30 million.
Either way, Harden is likely to earn considerably less in his new contract than the $42.3 million player option he declined.
Why Has Harden Not Signed Yet?
The delay appears to have been deliberate. Harden and the Cavaliers have been working toward a new multiyear agreement, but signing him immediately would have reduced Cleveland’s financial flexibility.
By leaving his contract unresolved, Harden allowed the front office to pursue other roster moves first.
One of those moves was the pursuit of Watson, who became a priority for Cleveland alongside free agent Jonathan Kuminga.
The Cavaliers also traded Dennis Schröder to the Charlotte Hornets for Tre Mann earlier this month, a move that created additional financial flexibility.
The Watson deal is now official, with Cleveland sending Max Strus to the Los Angeles Clippers and an unprotected 2031 first-round pick to Denver as part of the transaction.
Why Does the First Apron Matter?
The Watson transaction came through a sign-and-trade, which means Cleveland is hard-capped at the NBA’s first apron for the 2026-27 season.
The first apron is set at $209 million for the coming season. Cleveland therefore cannot simply exceed that threshold to give Harden a larger contract.
That makes every remaining dollar of cap flexibility important.
If Cleveland creates additional room through Whitmore, Harden could get closer to the $30 million mark. If it does not, his starting salary would likely be limited to the roughly $28.4 million currently available.
What Did Cleveland Get for the Money?
The Cavaliers used their financial flexibility to land a young forward before finalizing Harden’s contract.
Watson averaged 14.6 points during the 2025-26 season and reached career highs in rebounds, assists and steals. His new four-year deal is worth $88 million and includes a player option and trade kicker.
The move gives Cleveland another two-way player while preserving a path to bring Harden back.
What Happens Next?
With the Watson trade completed, Cleveland can now focus on finalizing Harden’s new contract.
Reports indicate the deal could be completed soon, with the Cavaliers having resolved the roster move that had been consuming their remaining financial flexibility.
The key variable is no longer whether Cleveland can accommodate Harden. It is how much room the team can create before signing him and how that space shapes the final contract.
