TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of Lebanon Joseph Aoun on Monday, May 4, 2026 reaffirmed his country's commitment to negotiations with Israel. He added that his party will accelerate the preparation for the third negotiation this week with the support of the United States amidst a sensitive regional situation.
"We are ready to speed up the pace of negotiations to the extent that the United States does. Ultimately, there is no way out of the negotiation process because we have no other choice, it serves the interests of all Lebanese," Aoun said when meeting with a delegation from the Strong Republic parliamentary bloc, as quoted by Sputnik and cited by Antara.
Aoun emphasized that the current situation is very fragile and demands strengthening national unity. He stressed that only through internal consolidation can Lebanon face increasingly complex political and security challenges.
According to Aoun, the third preparatory meeting involving Lebanon's ambassador to Washington is scheduled to take place in the coming days. This is to pave the way for the start of discussions under the auspices of the US.
He referred to this step as an important achievement, while also highlighting the direct attention given by US President Donald Trump to the developments in Lebanon in the context of efforts to promote regional stability.
Aoun reaffirmed that the goal of the negotiations remains unchanged, namely the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the occupied Lebanese territories and the return of detainees as part of a broader settlement.
He also underscored the importance of support for the military and state institutions as the main pillars of stability, amid the economic and political pressures that have been burdening Lebanon in recent years.
Aoun called on all political forces to unite behind the country, while emphasizing that the people of Lebanon are tired of facing prolonged conflicts and their destructive impacts.
