Lemhannas Outlines Indonesia's Strategy if Iran-Israel Conflict Drags On

4 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas) has developed contingency plans for the country in the event that the Iran-Israel conflict escalates into a prolonged crisis. Lemhannas Governor Ace Hasan Syadzily revealed that the institute has conducted crisis studies, including creating roadmaps and scenarios to address global geopolitical challenges and safeguard national resilience.

"Lemhannas's studies focus on crisis management, including roadmaps, projections, and predictions," Ace said during a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, June 23, as quoted by Antara. "We categorize these into quadrants 1, 2, 3, and 4 and develop scenarios based on where they fit. This is standard practice for us.”

Ace explained that Lemhannas conducts short-, medium-, and long-term studies and submits the findings as recommendations to the government, particularly President Prabowo Subianto.

Tensions between Iran and Israel escalated after the United States bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities on Saturday night, June 21. The two nations traded heightened attacks, with clashes intensifying by midday Monday.

Throughout the conflict, Lemhannas has closely monitored developments and provided ongoing recommendations to the government. "Our inputs are strictly confidential, as mandated by regulations," he noted, emphasizing the sensitive nature of the institute’s advice.

Lemhannas also delivers regular updates on global dynamics to the government and the president. "We provide real-time assessments of geopolitical and geo-economic shifts and their impact on our national resilience, especially in the economic sphere," said Ace, a former DPR member from the Golkar Party.

Jakarta Geopolitical Forum to Discuss Hormuz Strait Closure

Ace highlighted that the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz in Iran will be a key topic at the Jakarta Geopolitical Forum (JGF) IX in 2025. "This is a highly relevant issue and will be a focal point of discussion at the forum," he said at the JGF 2025 press conference in Jakarta on Monday.

On Sunday, June 22, Iran’s parliament approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical artery for international logistics and global oil supplies. Nearly 30% of the world’s oil trade flows through this chokepoint.

Ace added that Indonesia’s reliance on energy and oil trade through the strait will be a major discussion point at the JGF, which is scheduled for Tuesday, June 24.

The ongoing Iran-Israel conflict raises concerns about Indonesia’s domestic energy needs. This year's Jakarta Geopolitical Forum will explore anticipatory measures and mitigation strategies to address these challenges. With a focus on economic fragmentation and energy resilience, the forum aligns with President Prabowo’s vision of strengthening energy security.

Lemhannas considers the theme timely given the volatility and uncertainty in global geopolitics. Energy resilience is seen as a critical issue requiring urgent solutions.

The JFG forum is set to take place on June 24-25 and will bring together policymakers, academics, business leaders, and think tanks. According to Lemhannas, representatives from Australia, China, Egypt, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam, among others, have confirmed their attendance
