Middle East Conflict: How Iran-Israel Tensions Are Reshaping Tourism

The Iran-Israel war has undeniably impacted the tourism sector. Hariyanto, Deputy for Destination Development and Infrastructure at the Ministry of Tourism, addressed this situation, stating that the Iran-Israel conflict could affect flight activities in the Middle East.

"There will certainly be an influence, but we are in a position where certain aspects are advantageous. Indonesia is currently the safest place to travel with a wide range of destination options," he said on Tuesday, June 24, 2025.

Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana echoed this sentiment. "When the Middle East is facing conflict, I believe Indonesia becomes a safe place," she remarked. "We hope that people in Southeast Asia will travel to Indonesia, rather than to distant destinations in the Middle East or Europe."

Tourism in the Middle East

On Monday, June 23, 2025, Britain still considered Dubai safe to visit. As cited by The Independent, the British Foreign Office did not issue a travel warning for the United Arab Emirates, but they did state that the conflict was vulnerable to escalation. When airspace in the Middle East region was closed, several flights to and from Dubai-Abu Dhabi were canceled.

Dubai International Airport announced that flights from Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Dubai World Central-Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) might experience delays, cancellations, or diversions. "There is a possibility of travel disruption, including short-notice airspace closures, delayed and cancelled flights, and other unanticipated travel impacts," the airport said.

The British Foreign Office urged its citizens to review travel advice and monitor local and international media for the latest information.

Ceasefire Declared Amid Claims of Victory

A ceasefire between Iran and Israel came into effect on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. A "narrative war" then ensued between the two sides, with each claiming victory after the 12-day conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared victory in a video statement. According to him, Israel's attacks had destroyed two threats simultaneously: Iran's nuclear program and its ballistic missile project in Tehran.

Netanyahu stated in his speech on Tuesday, June 24, as quoted by CNN that Israel had destroyed Iran's nuclear program, warning if anyone in Iran attempted to rebuild the program, he would act with the same determination and the same force to stop such efforts.

Iran also claimed victory. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian referred to the conflict as a "war imposed by the foolishness of the Zionist regime." According to him, the ceasefire resulted from Iran's decision after the enemy suffered "unimaginable losses." As reported by Al Jazeera, Iran's Supreme National Security Council called the outcome of this war a clear political and military victory.
