Why Isn't the UN Resolving the Aid Crisis in Gaza?

4 hours ago 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United Nations (UN) spokesperson Stephane Dujarric has warned that ongoing Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip are causing a significant number of civilian casualties.

"Our colleagues at the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) have warned that the Israeli operation, including shootings and bombings across the Gaza Strip, continues to have a severely negative impact on civilians," Dujarric told reporters on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, as quoted by Anadolu.

Dujarric stated that the Israeli operation has resulted in numerous deaths and injuries, including among those seeking assistance. He further noted that Israeli authorities persist in limiting the delivery of fuel into and throughout Gaza, effectively impeding life-saving services for those in hardship and suffering from hunger.

Dujarric highlighted that the UN and its partners attempted to coordinate 15 humanitarian movements within Gaza last Tuesday. However, he clarified that only four organizations received full facilitation from the Israeli authorities.

"Seven other efforts were outright rejected, preventing the team from transporting water, retrieving damaged trucks, or repairing roads. Four other missions were initially approved but were then hindered in the field—although one mission was eventually carried out today. Other missions had to be canceled by the organizers," he explained.

According to Dujarric, the UN has been vocal, transparent, and persistent in its efforts to alleviate the suffering of the people in Gaza.

Israel has rejected international calls for a ceasefire. The Israeli military has reportedly carried out brutal attacks on Gaza since October 2023, claiming the lives of over 56,100 Palestinian civilians, the majority of whom were women and children.

Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Additionally, Israel faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its actions in the enclave.
