Mount Rinjani Accident: Brazilian Climber Juliana Among the Victims

8 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The joint SAR team is currently conducting the evacuation process for a Brazilian tourist named Juliana Marins or JDSP (27), who was reported to have fallen while hiking Mount Rinjani, Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) on Saturday, June 21, 2025.

The incident occurred in the Cemara Nunggal area, where the victim slipped towards Lake Segara Anak. The location of the fall is on the route to the peak of Rinjani and has a depth of hundreds of meters.

Responding to the report from the Rinjani National Park Office (BTNGR), the Mataram SAR Office immediately dispatched personnel to the scene. The search and rescue operation involved various parties, including the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), National Police (Polri), the East Lombok BPBD, East Lombok SAR Unit, EMHC, firefighters, Rinjani volunteers, porters, and other supporting elements.

The unfortunate incident involving JDSP adds to the list of accidents involving tourists on Mount Rinjani in recent months. The mountain, a favorite for local and foreign hikers, presents various extreme challenges that often result in fatalities.

Previously, on Saturday, May 3, 2025, a hiker from Malaysia was also reported to have fallen while hiking Rinjani. The Head of the Rinjani National Park Ecosystem Control, Budi Soesmardi, conveyed that a joint team was evacuating the hiker.

"The hiker who fell on the Torean route is currently still undergoing evacuation," said Budi in Mataram, Saturday, May 3, 2025, as reported by Antara.

According to Budi, the victim, RA, hiked with a group along the Torean route. At 13.00 local time, the hiking guide reported the incident to the national park authorities. "Currently, the victim is still at the location of the fall and is accompanied by the tour leader and three members of the climbing organizer," he said.

Budi added that RA was part of 23 people who began their ascent via the Sembalun route on May 1, 2025.

Prior to this, a similar incident occurred with another Malaysian hiker. A hiker named Chuah Uei Chyi from Malaysia had an accident while on Mount Rinjani.

The Head of the Rinjani National Park, Yarman, explained that the accident happened on the Sembalun climbing route, about 200 meters below the Sembalun Crater Rim, leading to Lake Segara Anak.

"We received a report from Halomi Trekker informing us that one of their guests had an accident," he said in Mataram, as quoted by Antara on Wednesday.

Yarman added that the information was received on Sunday, April 27, 2025, at around 14.11 a.m. local time from Halomi Trekker, an organizer of climbing activities.

In September 2024, a foreign tourist from Russia, Mordovina Alexandra (44), was reported missing and unreachable while hiking in the Mount Rinjani National Park area. She was suspected of hiking illegally without official permission. Before losing contact, Mordovina had sent a message via WhatsApp to her companions stating that she was hiking.

The search team then followed her trail through the entrance from Senaru Village, Bayan District. After a five-hour rescue effort by the SAR team, Mordovina was finally evacuated with a broken bone and head injuries due to the accident.

A month later, in October 2024, an Irish hiker named Farrel Paul also had an accident while hiking on the slopes of Mount Rinjani, West Nusa Tenggara. According to the Public Relations Officer of East Lombok Police, Iptu Nicolas Oesman, the victim was suspected to have slipped due to the sandy terrain.

The location of the incident was not far from where the hiker from Jakarta, Kaifat Rafi Mubarraq, fell, so the joint SAR team that was then evacuating Kaifat's body immediately went to Farrel Paul's location and successfully evacuated him on Wednesday morning, October 9, 2024.

The victim was then taken to the Emergency Shelter for medical treatment. Poor communication signals in the area hindered the evacuation process.
