TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Nadiem Makarim has expressed his willingness to cooperate in the investigation concerning alleged corruption in the procurement of Chromebook laptops, a project that took place during his tenure from 2019 to 2022.
Nadiem assured that he is prepared to be summoned and questioned by investigators from the Attorney General’s Office.
"I am ready to collaborate and support law enforcement authorities by providing statements or clarifications," Nadiem said during a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.
His legal counsel, Hotman Paris Hutapea, confirmed that Nadiem has consistently complied with the legal process. "He is ready to be examined at any time, he said he will be cooperative," Hotman stated at the press conference.
Hotman also affirmed that Nadiem will remain in Indonesia and has no plans to flee the country. "There is no indication of attempting to flee or anything like that, he is in the country," Hotman said.
The legal team further dismissed rumors that Nadiem is a fugitive. Nadiem’s name has never appeared on any wanted list (DPO). "How could there be a DPO? He is literally here," Hotman added.
These rumors arose after the Attorney General’s Office conducted searches at the residences of three former special staff members suspected of corruption related to the Chromebook procurement. Speculation circulated that Nadiem might be evading authorities.
However, Harli Siregar, Head of Public Relations for the Attorney General’s Office, denied these claims. "It's not true (Nadiem is a fugitive)," he said when contacted at his office on Monday, June 2, 2025.
Harli explained that the investigative team has not yet scheduled any examination or search involving Nadiem. "If there is, we will notify later," he added.
He also noted that Nadiem could be summoned for questioning in the future if deemed necessary. "Depending on the needs of the investigators, any party can be called for questioning and examination," Harli said.
The Attorney General’s Office launched the investigation after suspecting collusion in the procurement process aimed at directing the purchase towards Chrome-based laptops.
According to Harli, this procurement was part of the education digitization program during Nadiem’s leadership. However, the investigation is ongoing to identify budget users, project managers, and who initially recommended Chromebooks for the project.
The Attorney General’s Office recorded a total procurement budget of Rp9.982 trillion, which included Rp3.582 trillion from the Education Unit Fund (DSP) and Rp6.399 trillion from the Special Allocation Fund (DAK).
