Over 3,000 Boeing Workers Launch Strike After Rejecting Contract Deal

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Over 3,200 Boeing workers began a strike on Monday, August 4, 2025, after members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) District 837 voted against a revised four-year contract proposal from Boeing.

According to Newsweek, this marks the first large-scale strike at Boeing’s defense plant in the St. Louis area in nearly three decades. The last strike of this magnitude occurred in 1996 and lasted 99 days.

The labor action adds to the mounting challenges facing Boeing, which is already under scrutiny due to ongoing safety and production problems that have tarnished its public image.

In March, U.S. Transportation Minister Sean Duffy said Boeing had lost public trust following a panel blowout incident on an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9.

The company has also been linked to two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019 that killed 346 people, and a recent Boeing 787 Dreamliner accident in India that claimed 260 lives.

The current strike is expected to disrupt production of the F-47 fighter jet, a key part of the Next Generation Air Dominance program intended to replace the F-22 Raptor. Boeing secured a major contract for the program earlier this year and expanded its St. Louis facility to support the sixth-generation fighter’s development.

In response to the strike, Boeing Defense announced that it has contingency plans in place and will rely on non-union labor to continue operations.

The rejected contract included a roughly 40 percent average wage increase, a 20 percent general wage hike, a US$5,000 ratification bonus, enhanced wage progression, extended vacation time, and improved sick leave benefits, according to Boeing.

“We're disappointed our employees in St. Louis rejected an offer that featured 40% average wage growth,” said Dan Gillian, Boeing vice president and general manager of the St. Louis site, in a statement quoted by Reuters.

Tom Boelling, Business Representative for IAM District 837, stated via Newsweek that the workers “deserve a contract that reflects their skill, dedication, and the critical role they play in our nation's defense.”

Similar sentiments were shared by International IAM President Brian Bryant, who stated on his X account, “Our union is built on democracy, and our members have every right to demand a contract worthy of their contributions.”
