TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto has assured that all victims of the train collision in Bekasi, West Java, are receiving optimal medical treatment and will be entitled to compensation from the government.
“Everything has been handled. From what I’ve seen, it has been handled well,” Prabowo said during a visit to Dr. Chasbullah Abdulmadjid Regional General Hospital in Bekasi on Tuesday, April 28, after inspecting victims of the collision between a commuter line (KRL) and an intercity train.
During the visit, the president personally checked on injured victims who are undergoing intensive care at the government-run hospital.
Based on data from state railway operator PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) as of 08:45 AM local time, the collision near Bekasi Timur Station resulted in 14 fatalities and left 84 people injured.
Prabowo said the victims are currently being treated by medical teams, and that a number of them have already been allowed to return to their homes.
In addition to ensuring medical treatment, he stressed that the government will take full responsibility for the rights of victims, including providing compensation.
“Yes, everything will be provided, including compensation,” the president said briefly in response to questions from reporters regarding financial assistance for those affected.
Prabowo also conveyed his deep condolences, both personally and on behalf of the government, for the tragedy that occurred in Bekasi.
Alongside efforts to handle and recover victims, the president has ordered a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause of the train collision.
He added that the government plans to accelerate the development of safety infrastructure, particularly at railway crossings in densely populated areas, to prevent similar incidents from happening again in the future.
