TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to inaugurate the Ijen Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) in Bondowoso Regency, East Java, today, Thursday, June 26, 2025. This geothermal power plant becomes the first in East Java.
The investment value for this power plant project reaches Rp3.9 trillion. The Ijen Geothermal Power Plant will supply green energy to 85,000 households and is claimed to support the national clean energy transition by avoiding approximately 7 million tons of CO2 emissions during its operational period.
Initially, the Ijen Geothermal Power Plant, operated by Blawan, has a capacity of 35 megawatts. The total capacity that will be distributed to the Java power grid is up to 110 megawatts, as agreed upon in the power purchase agreement (PPA) for 30 years.
The project consists of six production wells, one injection well, and two reserve wells. The Ijen Geothermal Power Plant is supported by 83 transmission towers and a 150-kilovolt transmission network.
Prior to this, the power plant had been operational commercially for the first time in early February 2025. The Ijen Geothermal Power Plant is a result of the collaboration between PT Medco Power Indonesia (Medco Power) and Ormat Technologies through PT Medco Cahaya Geothermal. Medco Power is a subsidiary of PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk. (MedcoEnergi).
The President Director of Medco Power, Eka Satria, stated that completing the Ijen geothermal power plant construction demonstrates the company's ability to utilize Indonesia's geothermal resources using the latest technology. According to him, the project's success reinforces Medco Power's commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio and accelerating the development of renewable energy in the country.
"And underlines our dedication to support Indonesia's plan to accelerate the development of renewable energy," Eka said in a press release on February 7, 2025.
Roberto Lorato, the CEO of MedcoEnergi, stated that the start of operations at the Ijen Geothermal Power Plant demonstrates the company's commitment to offering sustainable energy solutions. The power plant is also important to the Net Zero Emission target.
"This project is also an important part of our roadmap to achieve Net Zero Emission for scope 1 and 2 by 2050, and scope 3 by 2060, as well as to support Indonesia's energy resilience and climate goals," he said.
