Pramono Anung Links Coal Use to Jakarta's Severe Pollution

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo identified coal as the main source of pollution in the capital city. 

"Pollution in Jakarta is mainly caused by power plants and industries that use coal as their fuel," Pramono said in Kembangan, West Jakarta, on Monday, June 23, 2025.

According to him, coal's high sulfur content contributes to air pollution. Therefore, he emphasized that power plants and industries must reduce their reliance on high-sulfur fuel to tackle Jakarta's pollution issues.

The governor also lauded the central government for closing down several factories around the Jakarta area due to air pollution. He noted that these closures, combined with recent rainfall, have led to a decrease in Jakarta's pollution levels over the past week.

"Apart from the rain, the decrease in pollution is also due to the factories not being in operation," said the politician from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP).

He shared this information during an inspection of the Srengseng City Forest in Kembangan, West Jakarta. He highlighted that the 15-hectare city forest is one of the green areas actively contributing to the improvement of Jakarta's air quality.

According to Pramono, Srengseng City Forest can produce 227.8 tons of oxygen and absorb 313 tons of CO2 annually. "So, its contribution to Jakarta is extraordinary, and this is something that needs to be maintained," he remarked.
