TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The spokesperson for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, stated that Russia’s cooperation with Iran in developing peaceful nuclear energy is entirely legitimate and will continue.
Zakharova made the statement on Thursday, June 26. “Our cooperation with Tehran in the field of peaceful nuclear energy is fully legitimate and serves the interests of both countries. This cooperation will continue. And I emphasize that this cooperation has never been opposed by anyone in any way,” she said during a briefing.
She also addressed the broader scope of bilateral ties. “Regarding the prospects of cooperation with Iran in general, this cooperation will continue to develop well in all fields,” Zakharova said.
Russia expressed hope that the damage to Iran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) can be repaired, although certain conditions must be met.
“The main condition of all this is permanent peace and firm guarantees that Iran's nuclear facilities and the materials, equipment, and personnel there will not be attacked again, and IAEA verification capabilities will not be used for purposes contrary to international law,” she explained.
According to Zakharova, the decision to suspend Iran’s cooperation with the IAEA was a response to the agency’s unclear stance and its failure to condemn the actions of Israel and the United States.
Earlier, on Sunday, June 22, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, urged that Israel’s nuclear facilities be placed under the supervision of the IAEA.
