Indonesia to Host World's Ninth-Largest Floating LNG Facility, Says Energy Minister

14 hours ago 6

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Bahlil Lahadalia, announced that Indonesia will have the world's ninth-largest Floating Liquified Natural Gas (FLNG) facility, which will also be the largest of its kind in the country.

Bahlil shared this news during an inspection of two gas companies, Genting Oil Kasuri and LNG Tangguh, in Teluk Bintuni Regency, West Papua, on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

According to him, the construction of Genting Oil Kasuri's FLNG has reached 53 percent completion. To verify its development, he stated that the government would dispatch a team to directly inspect the FLNG construction plant located in China.

"It will be the largest floating LNG in Indonesia, and according to their reports, it ranks ninth globally. However, we will validate its progress. I will send a team to visit the plant in China," Bahlil said, as quoted in a written statement on Friday, June 13, 2025.

Bahlil explained that the FLNG facility is being built by the Genting Group through its subsidiary, PT Layar Nusantara Gas. In June 2024, the company signed a contract with Wison New Energies for the construction of an FLNG, valued at US$962.8 million, with a capacity of 1.2 million metric tons per annum (mtpa).

He added that the FLNG will receive its gas supply from the Asap Kido Merah (AKM) project, managed by Genting Oil Kasuri. The AKM project is targeted to produce 330 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas starting in 2027.

"This huge investment is expected to not only strengthen the national gas infrastructure but also establish Indonesia as an important player in the global LNG market," Bahlil concluded.
