Persija Jakarta Scraps Stadium Construction Plans

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director of Jakarta football club Persija, Mohamad Prapanca, has confirmed the club's decision to cancel plans for building a new stadium. Instead, Macan Kemayoran will utilize the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS) as their home ground for Liga 1 competitions.

Prapanca had previously and frequently voiced Persija's ambition to construct a stadium, though specific details were never disclosed.

"Regarding the stadium, I didn't expect to receive a call from Pak Governor (Pramono Anung). He pledged to facilitate JIS for football enthusiasts, particularly the Jakmania (Persija's fans)," Prapanca said, as quoted from a video on Persija's official YouTube account on Friday, June 13.

Prapanca conveyed the positive news from Pramono Anung. "He said, 'There's no need to build a stadium. JIS was indeed built for Persija. As long as I am governor, please make full use of it,'" he recounted.

Persija had initially planned to construct a new stadium due to recurring issues with securing home match venues in Jakarta. Both JIS and Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium were often unavailable, being utilized for other events. In the previous season, Persija resorted to using Pakansari Stadium in Bogor Regency and Patriot Candrabhaga Stadium in Bekasi as their home bases.

Prapanca further explained that he had communicated with Pramono prior to his inauguration as Jakarta Governor. During that conversation, Pramono inquired about Persija's stadium construction plans. "I replied, 'We are proud that Jakarta has two magnificent stadiums, but Persija has never actually used them for official matches,'" Prapanca shared.

With the assurance from Governor Pramono, Prapanca indicated that the club would now focus on optimizing JIS as Persija's primary home ground. "That is what we are currently focusing on. We aim to commercialize JIS. Given its North Jakarta location, we need to strategize on how to increase its recognition and utilization," he concluded.
