2026 World Cup Qualifiers Recap: Argentina Draws, Brazil Wins

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Uruguayan national team defeated Venezuela 2-0 in a continuation of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers CONMEBOL Zone at Centenario Stadium, Montevideo on Wednesday morning, June 11, 2025. Uruguay faced tough competition from Venezuela but successfully secured the win through goals from Rodrigo Aguirre and Giorgian De Arrascaete.

The victory brings La Celeste one step closer to the 2026 World Cup. They currently hold fourth place with 24 points, while Venezuela is in seventh place with 17 points from 16 matches.

The first goal for Marcelo Bielsa's squad was scored towards the end of the first half. Maximiliano Araujo's corner kick was headed in by Aguirre on the left side of the penalty box, putting Uruguay in the lead 1-0 at halftime.

The home team scored another goal just two minutes into the second half. This time, it was a shot from Giorgian de Arrascaeta from outside the penalty box into the top left corner of Venezuela's goal, making the score 2-0.

With only two matches remaining, the Uruguay national team has secured its spot, at least for the playoffs. They only need to win their last two matches to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.

At Estadio Monumental, Buenos Aires, the Argentina national team drew against Colombia. Thiago Almada scored in the 81st minute, assisted by Exequiel Palacios, resulting in a 1-1 tie.

Colombia took the lead through Luis Diaz's goal in the 24th minute. He worked with Kevin Castano before taking a shot inside the penalty box. The ball went past goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

The draw did not shake Argentina from the top spot in the 2026 World Cup qualification standings in the Latin American zone. Meanwhile, Colombia is in sixth place with 22 points. With two matches remaining, Colombia's position is not yet secure.

At Neo Quimica Arena, Sao Paulo, Brazil secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Paraguay thanks to a goal from Vinicius Junior in the 44th minute. This marks Selecao's first win under coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Brazil dominated possession with 73 percent, while Paraguay had only 27 percent. The Samba team also dominated in goal-scoring opportunities with 11 to five. With 25 points from 16 matches, Brazil is now in third position.
