TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - U.S. President Donald Trump unexpectedly announced his early departure from the G7 Summit on Monday night, returning to Washington a day ahead of schedule. His departure followed a social media post that appeared to hint at further bloodshed in the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict.
While posing for a G7 "family photo" with other leaders before heading to the airport, Trump informed journalists that events in the Middle East left him with no alternative. "I have to be back as soon as I can," he said, clarifying that his early exit was unrelated to any summit discussions. The summit was set to continue with a dinner on Monday night and additional meetings on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
"I wish I could stay for tomorrow, but they understand," Trump said about other leaders, as reported by Politico.
His earlier comments to journalists on Monday, made amidst meetings with world leaders, had been more explicit regarding the situation.
"Iran is not winning this war, and they should talk and they should talk immediately before it’s too late," Trump said.
Moments later, when questioned again about the situation in Iran, Trump sounded more optimistic: "I think Iran basically is at the negotiating table. They want to make a deal and as soon as I leave here we’re going to be doing something."
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted on X that "much was accomplished" during Trump's meetings with other leaders at the G7 Summit in Canada. However, she continued, "but because of what’s going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State."
The sudden change in plans further amplifies the uncertainty surrounding Israel's ongoing military operation in Iran. Trump's warning of an escalating Israeli attack on Iran, conveyed in a threatening and somewhat vague social media post, came after a day of meetings with world leaders.
"Iran should have signed the ‘deal’ I told them to sign. What a shame, and waste of human life," Trump wrote on TruthSocial Monday night. "Simply stated, IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON. I said it over and over again!"
He concluded with an alarming tone: "Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!"
It remains unclear what prompted the startling message, which casually called for the evacuation of a city of 10 million people. This warning came just hours after the Israeli government issued its own evacuation order to residents in northern Tehran, cautioning them of an imminent widespread attack.
It is also uncertain whether Trump was aware of Israel's new plans to strike additional targets inside Iran, or if he was simply attempting to pressure Tehran back to nuclear negotiations.
Officials at the White House and the Pentagon sought to clarify in nearly identical posts on X that U.S. forces in the region would maintain a "defensive" posture and would not join an Israeli attack.
These posts followed a full day of meetings at the G7 Summit, where European officials reportedly stated that the U.S. was blocking a joint statement calling for de-escalation of the developing conflict between Israel and Iran. However, according to CNN, Trump had no intention of signing such a joint statement.
