TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) believes that the proposed salary hike for judges could help prevent bribery. KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo said that the increase would protect judges from various temptations to engage in corruption.
Despite this plan, the KPK will continue monitoring judges to ensure they carry out their responsibilities properly.
"Certainly, a system is also needed so that all mechanisms and procedures that serve as the foundation for the judges' duties and functions can genuinely provide protection," Budi said at the KPK headquarters in South Jakarta on Friday, June 13, 2025.
The plan has drawn criticism from Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW). ICW researcher Erma Nuzulia called the proposal flawed. According to ICW, judges already receive significant salaries and allowances. Under Government Regulation No. 94 of 2012, newly appointed judges earn a base salary of Rp2,064,100 with a monthly allowance of Rp8,500,000.
These amounts increased under Government Regulation No. 44 of 2024 to Rp2,785,700 in salary and Rp11,900,000 in allowance.
Erma explained that judges with more experience and higher positions, such as court chiefs, can earn tens of millions of rupiah each month. Their monthly allowances alone can reach around Rp50 million. She added that ICW has reviewed the incomes of judges involved in bribery cases, including those tied to the murder case involving Gregorius Ronald Tannur.
She estimated that judges receive about Rp300 million annually, excluding other benefits. For this reason, she argued that bribery in the judiciary is not due to financial hardship. "It is because of greed," Erma said on Saturday, June 14, 2025.
The plan to raise judges’ salaries by up to 280 percent was previously announced by President Prabowo Subianto during the inauguration of lower court judges at the Supreme Court’s Balairung in Central Jakarta on June 12, 2025.
In his speech, Prabowo acknowledged the heavy workload judges bear. “I, Prabowo Subianto, the 8th President of the Republic of Indonesia, today announce that judges' salaries will be increased for the welfare of the judges, with varying increases according to their ranks, where the highest increase reaches 280 percent,” he said.
His statement was met with loud applause from the newly inaugurated judges. Prabowo clarified that the largest raise would go to junior judges or those at the lowest rank.
