TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President of the United States, Donald Trump, strongly denied on Friday night media reports claiming that his administration has discussed the possibility of helping Iran access up to $30 billion to develop a civilian nuclear energy program.
CNN reported on Thursday, and NBC News reported on Friday, that the Trump administration in recent days has explored the possibility of economic incentives for Iran in exchange for halting its uranium enrichment.
CNN, as cited by Al Arabiya, quoted officials as saying that several proposals have been submitted and are still in the early stages.
"Which Fake News Media said, 'President Trump wants to give Iran $30 Billion to build non-military Nuclear facilities'? Never heard of this ridiculous idea," Trump wrote on Truth Social on Friday night, referring to the report as a "HOAX."
Since April, Iran and the US have been engaged in indirect talks aimed at finding a new diplomatic solution to Iran's nuclear program. Tehran claims its program is peaceful, while Washington wants to ensure Iran cannot develop nuclear weapons.
Earlier this week, Trump announced a ceasefire between the US ally, Israel, and its regional rival Iran to halt a war that began on June 13 when Israel attacked Iran. The Israel-Iran conflict has sparked concerns in the already tense Middle East region since the beginning of Israel's genocide in Gaza in October 2023.
The US attacked Iran's nuclear sites over the past weekend, and Iran targeted a US base in Qatar on Monday in retaliation before Trump announced the ceasefire.
Israel is widely believed to be the only Middle Eastern country with nuclear weapons and says its war against Iran aims to prevent Tehran from developing its own nuclear weapons.
Iran is a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, while Israel is not. The UN nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, which inspects Iran, says it has no "credible indications" of an active coordinated weapons program in Iran.
