TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Not only for Apple, the threat of a 25 percent import tariff is also directed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump towards phone manufacturers and similar products such as Samsung. Trump demands production to be carried out in the United States for all phones sold in the country.

In his statement to reporters at the White House last Friday, May 23, 2025, Trump emphasized that this tariff policy will be applied uniformly. "This will also apply to Samsung and anyone who makes the product, if not, it's not fair," he said as quoted from The Verge report, Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

Previously, through a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump specifically referred to Apple, which is trying to move most of its iPhone production from China to India. Apple did this to avoid becoming a victim of the US-China tariff war.

"I have long told Tim Cook of Apple that I expect the iPhone to be sold in the United States to be produced and made in the United States, not in India or elsewhere," he said. "If not, Apple must pay a tariff of at least 25 percent to the United States."

Apple plans to move the entire supply of iPhones for the US market from India. This plan includes the construction of a $1.5 billion factory by Foxconn in Chennai, South India, which will produce iPhone screens. The expansion of production to India has been implemented as part of Apple's supply chain diversification strategy, accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Regarding Apple's latest plan, Trump conveyed, "He said he will go to India to build a factory. I said, it's okay to go to India, but you won't be able to sell here without a tariff, and that's the rule."

Currently, products from India are subject to a basic tariff of 10 percent, while products from China are subject to tariffs of up to 30 percent. Although most of Apple's products are still exempt from these tariffs, global trade uncertainties have driven the company to continue moving production from China to other countries.

Apple has previously stated its commitment to invest $500 billion in the US in the next four years. CEO Tim Cook also donated $1 million to Trump's inauguration fund. However, industry analysts believe that producing the iPhone entirely in the US is a challenging feat.
