Trump's Response to Zohran Mamdani's Potential Mayoral Win in New York

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - United States President Donald Trump has weighed in on the potential mayoral victory of Zohran Mamdani in New York, labeling him a communist on his path to becoming mayor. "It’s finally happened, the Democrats have crossed the line. Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor," Trump wrote on Truth Social on Thursday, June 26, 2025.

Trump further criticized Mamdani's supporters, referring to them as unintelligent. "He looks bad, his voice is screechy, he's not too bright, he got AOC+3, all the dumb people, supporting him, and even our great Palestinian Senator, cryin' Chuck Schumer, looked down on him. Yes, this is a big moment in our country's history!"

Trump referred to those supporting Mamdani as unintelligent. "He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart, he’s got AOC+3, Dummies ALL, backing him, and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, is grovelling over him. Yes, this is a big moment in the History of our Country!"

Trump's Funding Threat

As quoted from Independent, Trump threatened to withhold federal funding for New York if Mamdani is elected mayor. "I think he admits it ... If he does get in, I'm gonna be president and he's gonna have to do the right thing or they're not getting any money. He's gotta do the right thing," Trump stated.

Zohran Mamdani's Response

During an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday, June 29, 2025, moderator Kristen Walker provided Zohran Mamdani an opportunity to directly address Trump's comments. Mamdani indicated that he has had to become accustomed to the nature of Trump's public remarks.

According to Mamdani, Trump's personal attacks serve as a deliberate diversion from the substantive issues at the core of his political campaign. "I have already had to start to get used to the fact that the president will talk about how I look, how I sound, where I'm from, who I am, ultimately, because he wants to distract from what I'm fighting for," Mamdani explained, suggesting a strategic attempt to shift focus away from policy debates.

Mamdani also directly addressed being labeled a communist and a radical. He clarified his political ideology, referring to himself as a democratic socialist.

"And when we talk about my politics, I call myself a Democrat socialist in many ways inspired by the words of Dr. King from decades ago," he stated.
