U.S.-China Trade Talks Continue in London

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade negotiations between the United States and China are set to continue for a second day in London, England, on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. As reported by Fox, officials from both countries are seeking to ease tensions that have expanded beyond import tariffs to include restrictions on technology exports and shipments of rare earth minerals, issues that threaten the global supply chain and economic growth.

The talks began on Monday at Lancaster House, a 19th-century mansion near Buckingham Palace, lasting over six hours and concluding around 8 p.m. local time. Discussions are scheduled to resume at 10 a.m. local time on Tuesday, according to a U.S. source familiar with the negotiations.

U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism about the negotiations on Monday, stating they were "going well" and he was "only getting good reports" from his team in London.

"We are doing well with China. China's not easy, " said Trump, without providing details on the substance of the negotiations. When asked about the lifting of export controls, Trump told reporters at the White House, "We'll see about that."

In London, Bessent informed reporters they had a "good meeting," while Lutnick described the discussions as "fruitful."

Washington and Beijing are attempting to revive a temporary agreement reached in Geneva that had eased trade tensions and calmed global markets. However, the U.S. later accused China of slow compliance, particularly regarding the shipment of rare earth minerals.

Attending the London negotiations for the U.S. are Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Trade Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The Chinese contingent is led by Vice Premier He Lifeng, accompanied by Trade Minister Wang Wentao and the ministry's chief trade negotiator, Li Chenggang.

The inclusion of Lutnick, whose agency oversees U.S. export controls, underscores the significance of rare earth minerals in these discussions. Some analysts interpret this as an indication that Trump is willing to impose export restrictions recently enacted by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Lutnick did not attend the Geneva negotiations where both countries agreed to a 90-day truce to lift some of the triple-digit tariffs they had imposed on each other.

While Wang Wentao has been part of President Xi Jinping's entourage on overseas trips since taking office in 2020, Li is a veteran trade bureaucrat who previously served as the ambassador to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
