US Says No Plans to Ground Boeing 787s Following Air India Crash

17 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States does not plan to halt Boeing 787 flights following the fatal crash of Air India that killed more than 240 people. Transportation Minister Sean Duffy and Acting Federal Aviation Administration Chief Chris Rocheleau made these comments at the press conference. They said they have seen the crash video in India.

Duffy stated he has spoken with National Transportation Safety Board Chair Jennifer Homendy. NTSB and FAA teams, supported by Boeing and GE Aerospace engine manufacturers, will depart for India.

"They have to get on the ground and take a look. But again, right now it'd be way too premature," Duffy said. "People are looking at videos and trying to assess what happened, which is never a strong, smart way to make decisions on what took place."

Duffy said the FAA is reviewing information with Boeing and GE as part of the crash investigation. Duffy also emphasized that the US government will not hesitate to implement any safety recommendations that may emerge. "We will follow the facts and put safety first," Duffy said.

According to Rocheleau, as the investigation progresses, if there is any available information about any risks, they will mitigate those risks.

Duffy said the FAA is ready to send additional resources to obtain the required data to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

The aviation world is again in mourning due to the crash of Air India on Thursday, June 12, 2025. Only one person survived out of the 242 passengers and crew of Air India. The Air India aircraft crashed near the main international airport in Ahmedabad, Western India.

The plane crashed midday local time shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport. The aircraft was supposed to fly to London.

The airline said in a separate statement that among the passengers were 169 Indian citizens, 53 British citizens, one Canadian citizen, and seven Portuguese citizens. However, the airline did not mention the nationality of the aircraft crew.

In a post on X, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the tragedy "shocking and saddening." "It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it."

The involved aircraft was the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, according to the flight tracking website Flightradar24, which said the plane received its final signal a few seconds after takeoff. Aircraft accidents are not common in India, which has some of the strictest air standards in the world after being rocked by a series of bombings and hijackings from the 1970s to the 1990s.
