TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - No survivors were found among the 242 passengers and crew of the Air India plane that crashed near the main international airport in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad, said the city's police commissioner on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
A video uploaded to social media shortly after the accident and verified by NBC News showed thick black smoke billowing into the sky from the civilian site south of the airport.
“It appears there are no survivors in the plane crash,” said G.S. Malik, the police commissioner for Ahmedabad, adding that 'some residents also died' when the plane crashed in a residential area where offices are located.
“Exact figures on casualties are being ascertained,” he said.
The plane crashed around midday local time, shortly after taking off from the Ahmedabad Airport. There were 242 people on board.
Earlier that day, local police said that more than 200 bodies had been taken to Ahmedabad hospitals. Separately, a rescue team said they had found between 30 and 35 bodies at the scene.
The plane's tail was seen protruding from the wall of a building in images from the crash site shared on X by India's central police. Another photo showed rescue teams standing by the charred wreckage of the plane and fallen trees near a residential complex.
The plane was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members, the airline's spokesperson told NBC News.
The airline said in a separate statement that among the passengers were 169 Indian citizens, 53 British citizens, one Canadian citizen, and seven Portuguese citizens. “The injured are being taken to the nearest hospitals,” it added.
The airline did not mention the nationality of the cabin crew.
It's unclear how many passengers died in the flight scheduled to depart at 1:10 p.m. local time and expected to land in London at 6:25 p.m. local time.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the tragedy “stunned and saddened us” in a post on X. “It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it.”
Separately, Indian Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said in a post on X that he was “shocked and devastated.”
“I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift and coordinated action,” he said. “Rescue teams have been mobilized, and all efforts are being made to ensure medical aid and relief support are being rushed to the site.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in a statement that he was continuing to receive the latest information on the situation. Buckingham Palace said that King Charles III was also receiving the latest information.
According to flight tracking site Flightradar24, the involved plane was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The site said the plane's last signal was received a few seconds after takeoff.
“We are aware of initial reports and are working to gather more information,” Boeing said in a statement.
Plane crashes are not common in India, which has some of the strictest air standards in the world after being shaken by a series of bombings and hijackings from the 1970s to the 1990s.
