4 Key Iranian Energy Infrastructures Hit by Israeli Attacks

3 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, JakartaIsrael launched airstrikes targeting critical parts of Iran's energy infrastructure. According to the Iranian Ministry of Petroleum, the main fuel depot was hit, and a refinery in Tehran caught fire.

The South Pars gas field, the world’s largest gas-producing region jointly owned with Qatar, was also among the targets. This strike halted crude oil production, with Phase 14 of the main processing unit engulfed in flames. Offshore operations, which typically produce 12 million cubic meters of gas per day, were also shut down.

In a separate incident, the Fajr-e Jam gas processing facility in Bushehr was reported to be on fire. This plant relies heavily on supplies from South Pars. The Ministry confirmed that the site was directly affected by the Israeli strike.

As reported by Al Jazeera, four major oil and gas facilities in Iran were targeted in the attack:

1. Shahran Depot

This depot is a key fuel distribution hub for Tehran, storing up to 260 million liters of fuel across 11 tanks. It supplies gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel to terminals in northern Tehran.

2. Shahr-e Rey Refinery

One of Iran’s oldest state-run oil refineries, with a capacity of 225,000 barrels per day. Damage to this facility could severely disrupt energy logistics in the country's most densely populated and economically important region. While local media denied an attack on the refinery, officials acknowledged a fire in a tank located outside the complex.

3. South Pars

Located in the Persian Gulf, this gas field contains roughly 1,260 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas, accounting for about 20 percent of global reserves. It provides two-thirds of Iran’s gas supply and shares its reservoir with Qatar’s North Field.

4. Fajr-e Jam

This is one of the largest gas processing plants serving Iran’s southern and central regions. The government estimates the disruption from the attack could cause daily economic losses of up to US$250 million.

Israel’s assault on these strategic energy sites has raised serious concerns over Middle East energy security and global oil market stability. Following the strikes, global oil prices surged by as much as 9 percent on Friday, June 13, 2025, according to Al Jazeera.

The situation is further complicated by Iran’s threat to shut down the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow waterway carries nearly 20 percent of the world’s oil supply and connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. The U.S. Energy Information Agency describes it as the most critical oil transit chokepoint globally.
