TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and the Netherlands have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in developing technology-based greenhouse horticulture. This strategic move aims to tackle food security challenges. This commitment was highlighted during a courtesy call between Indonesian Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono and Dutch Deputy Director-General for Agro at the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature, and Food Security, Guido Landheer, at the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture office on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
Sudaryono stressed the importance of involving the younger generation in modern agriculture to regenerate farmers. "We need more young Indonesians, the young generation of Indonesia, to be involved in this horticulture using greenhouses," he stated.
He explained that while greenhouse technology requires a high initial investment, it proves more efficient in the long run. "Compared to traditional methods, planting vegetables and fruits using greenhouse technology appears more expensive at the beginning. However, in the long run, greenhouses can increase productivity and reduce costs. This means that the use of greenhouses is more efficient," he added.
Sudaryono affirmed that the government is ready to support young people interested in agricultural development. "Young Indonesians interested in the agricultural sector must be facilitated. As the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, I and all ministry staff are committed to facilitating the young generation of Indonesia who want to train, improve their abilities, and enrich their knowledge in the field of horticulture," he said.
Meanwhile, Guido Landheer emphasized that the Netherlands' goal is not to boost exports but to share innovation and technology. "We bring innovation, but we also want to understand the conditions in Indonesia. That is the reason we are here, to learn from the situation here, share knowledge, and work together in the future," he noted.
As one of the world's largest agricultural exporters, the Netherlands brought a delegation including seed providers, greenhouse technology experts, financing institutions, and training specialists. These elements are expected to accelerate the transformation of Indonesia's agriculture toward a more innovative, sustainable, and inclusive system.
